Edited by Theresa S. Talley, Emily S. Miller, Neva G. Sullaway
Photography by Chris Rov Costa

San Diego Seafood: Then & Now invites readers to experience the history of San Diego through the people who fish its waters, prepare its catch, and carry their culinary traditions from one generation to the next.

Far more than a cookbook, this richly photographed volume brings together more than 75 traditionally inspired recipes, fascinating historical narratives, family memories, chef guidance, seafood preparation tips, species facts, and practical substitutions for eating with the seasons. Familiar favorites such as tuna and halibut share the table with black cod, spiny lobster, and other treasures of the San Diego coast.

Neva’s Contribution

Neva Sullaway served as one of the book’s three editors and contributed to its expansive account of San Diego’s fishing history—from the region’s earliest Indigenous stewardship to its modern multicultural culinary community.

The project reflects the maritime curiosity and commitment to preserving human stories that run throughout Neva’s work. Collaborating with researchers, historians, fishing families, artists, photographers, scientists, and chefs; she helped shape a volume that is historically meaningful, visually compelling, and genuinely useful in the kitchen.
